En la economía contemporánea, los servicios han adquirido creciente significación tanto por su
magnitud en el conjunto de la actividad económica como por el hecho de que en la producción y
gestión de los mismos se introducen innovaciones que afectan la eficiencia y competitividad del resto
de la economía. En América Latina y el Caribe (ALC), la evolución de los distintos servicios ha sido
desigual y en general con rezagos respecto a las economías más avanzadas. En este trabajo se
analizarán, en el contexto iberoamericano, los esfuerzos realizados por los países de la región para
desarrollar innovaciones tecnológicas y organizacionales, particularmente en telecomunicaciones,
turismo y banca. Dado que el paradigma de las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC) ha
sido determinante en la evolución de la innovación en servicios y representa una frontera tecnológica
en movimiento, es también necesario estudiar sus principales tendencias.

DIRSI, a través de su programa MARTA, respondió a la convocatoria de OSIPTEL en un informe elaborado por el investigador Raúl Pérez Reyes donde se sugiere que la diferenciación de cargos de interconexión propuesta no debería plantearse de forma aislada del resto de las medidas regulatorias, en especial de aquellas que deberían establecer el método de regulación de las tarifas y de los cargos de acceso hacia las redes rurales.

ONE of the things holding back agriculture in developing countries is the unwillingness of farmers with small plots of land to invest in better seed and fertiliser. Only half of Kenyan farmers buy improved seed or spend money on other inputs. Many use poor-quality seed kept from previous harvests. That is understandable when drought or deluge can destroy their crop, but it has the effect of reducing yields. A new microinsurance scheme promises to help.

This paper evaluates the importance of mobile phone expenditure in consumer budgets of the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka,
Philippines and Thailand. We examine if mobile phone services in the selected countries display characteristics of a luxury good or that of a necessity. Upon evaluating
the expenditure patterns as a share of total personal income we conclude the service to be a necessity.
As Engel curves show how consumption of various goods and services change with variations in the consumer’s income, we estimate Engel curves for expenditure on
mobile phone services for the BOP in the selected countries to show that mobile phones are part of everyday lives among the selected consumer group.
